Swans edge out Nomads in AFL season opener

The Tamworth Swans beat the New England Nomads by 17 points in the opening round of the Essential Energy AFL competition on Saturday. Despite only trailing by nine points at three quarter time, the Nomads could not peg back the lead as the score finished 15.14.104 to 13.9.87.

Forward goal sneak Weston Whitby kicked five goals for the Nomads, while Dave Richards bagged four majors. Nathan Lambie, Clinton Ballagh and Matt Woodward were among the best players for the Nomads.

The Nomads started well, taking a five point 4.2.26 to 3.3.21 lead into quarter time.

A five goal to one term from the Swans in the second quarter saw the home side establish a 21 point lead, 8.9.57 to 5.6.36 at the main break. The Nomads fought back in the third term, kicking five goals to three to narrow the lead to just nine points. However, the Swans held onto their lead to record a narrow win.

In other results, Inverell beat the Kangaroos 154-83 and the Cats overcame Gunnedah 99-83.

This Saturday the Nomads face the Cats at Bellevue Oval.
