Nomads Men – Resilient Effort in Tough Conditions
The Nomads travelled to Wolsely Oval in Gunnedah on June 19 with the hope of another victory. Despite being severely undermanned with only 16 players — and at times just 14 due to injuries— the Nomads delivered a gritty and courageous performance under unrelenting Gunnedah heat, which somehow managed to rival an Armidale summer. Final scores were Gunnedah – 18.19.127 def NE Nomads – 5.12.42. For the Nomads James Walters kicked 2, while Johnathan Frost, Hunter Greene and John Paul Canavan kicked one apiece. Best players were Cotter Litchfield, John-Paul Canavan, Bobby Boyd, Felix Weston, Hunter Greene and Zach Goldfinch.
Unfortunately the Women’s team forfeited due to a lack of numbers.
With no bench for rotations and several players pushed into unfamiliar roles, the boys held
strong and showed exactly the kind of determination that will shape the future of this squad.
Coaches’ Call
With Donny and Gus unavailable, our seasoned veteran Chris (196cm and just shy of 50 years
old!) stepped into the ruck position. His comeback lasted a valiant 11 minutes and 27 seconds
before a knee to the ribs curtailed his campaign. He finished the game sore but standing – a
legend’s effort.
Three-game rookie Lachie, having enjoyed a minor sleep-in, took over ruck duties and lasted
longer than his boss! Despite running faster than he could kick, his attack on both the ball and
the opposition was a real highlight.
The Dynamic Duval Duo – Jimmy and Marshall – gave their parents a show on family day
weekend. A big thank you to Marshall’s dad Cliff for keeping the team fuelled with Powerade
and lollies! Jimmy entertained as always – kicking more out on the full than through the big sticks, yet still
celebrating point-blank majors like Jason Akermanis. Never change, Jimmy.
Captain Hunter Greene drew heavy attention from the opposition, often being triple-teamed – a
true sign of respect from the other side. Mr Fix-It Zack played his best game in green, white, and black – even sacrificing a tooth in the process.
Standout of the day was Cotter Litchfield, with calm rebounding from defence, clean hands
under pressure, and sharp decision-making.
And finally, Players’ Player went to John-Paul Canavan – a silky-skilled footballer whose sense
of timing and positioning was almost divine.
Looking Ahead: we’re excited to welcome up to six returning players this week as we hit the road again to
take on the Tamworth Kangaroos. A strong week on the training track lies ahead.
