Nomads Triumph in Qualifying Final
In difficult wet conditions at the Bellevue, the groundwork and speed of the Nomads were pivotal in a satisfying 27 point victory over the Inverell Saints; a victory in which every player contributed. The commitment of players to the hard ball must have been particularly pleasing for coach Brendan Meehan and is, hopefully, a sign of the attitude that will be shown in upcoming weeks.
The game started in heavy rain with the Saints kicking to the Grandstand end and saw the Saints control much of the play. Those early forays into the forward line were repelled easily by the back-line players, in a sign of what was to come. Nick Schultz in particular displayed a great deal of composure in pressure situations. By the ten minute mark the Nomads had gained the upper hand and by the end of the first quarter the Nomads were two goals ahead, a result of the endeavour shown by the midfielders such as Hamish and Darby Pearce, Calla Teseling and Dan Sides who threw themselves into the bottom of every pack. The second quarter saw the Nomads post two goals while the Saints scored one goal seven points. Not many of those points, however, involved actual shots; most of them being a result of scrambles around the goal area.
In the third quarter the Nomads were able to take control with forwards David Richards, Benji Julien and Weston Whitby creating trouble for the Saints backs with their quick movement and ground skills. In this quarter the Nomads extended their lead to 21 points.
The last quarter was a hard bruising affair in which only one goal was scored. The Saints could not get the ball into their forward fifty thanks to the work of, amongst others, Reece Whitby, Tom Walsh, Rowdy and Jonathan Frost.
Overall it was a very pleasing effort on the part of the team and we look forward to the game in Tamworth next Saturday against the Roos.
