The New England Nomads bagged their first victory of the year against the Muswellbrook Cats on Saturday. Playing their first home game for the season at Bellevue Oval, the Nomads pulled out all the stops and now have their sights set on the top.

“It was a pleasing day” Nomads coach Brendan Meehan said of his team’s win. ‘Muswellbrook have been beaten already in this competition so we were reasonably confident but you really never know what to expect. Especially the way the competition has been going this year, it’s going to be a tough season.”

“We had 11 players that weren’t on the team last year and it was really good to see everyone playing together. We can only improve which is pleasing and by working together we can only get better”

In the lead up to the weekend’s game, Meehan spoke of cranking up the intensity and following Saturday’s win, believes the only way is up for the team.

“We definitely lifted our iintensity. A bit more is needed but we really improved. Each game is getting better and we are growing from it. Weston Whitby had a great game, he kicked 12 goals. Hamish Pearce also played well, stepping up to the role of captain. Daniel Sides went well on the wing and Clinton Ballagh had a good game across the backline.”

“The only downside to the day was forward Simon Stubbs breaking his leg early on. He will be out for the season which is disappointing. Otherwise it was a great day and hopefully we will keep improving.”
