Nomads men record a strong win against the Inverell Saints at home
The Nomads have broken the shackles and finally beaten one of the sides above them on the ladder with a 20 point win over the Inverell Saints on Saturday the 25th of June. It was close in the last two quarters but the Nomads cleared away with 2 goals from small-tall Fraser Menzies (who kicked 6 for the game). At centre half back Noah Connick was dominant, but he was aided and assisted by Sam Jackson, Daniel Boyd and Xavier Walsh. David ‘Rampaging’ Richards and Clarrie Barker dominated in the mid-field and Teddy Tedmanson worked tirelessly all day as the only ruckman. It was a real team effort with everyone in the team contributing. Final socres were Nomads 14.10.94 to Inverell’s 10.14.74.
The Nomads brains trust were heartened to see the return of Hunter Green, Noah Connick, Lindsay Brown, Jake Bouchier, Fraser Menzies, Lindsay Brown and Ethan Karpany. Unfortunately our ruckmen were both unavailable (Tom Hunt with COVID and Quenten Tomasini still interstate), This meant that the new b oy from the solar farm – Teddy – would have to perform ruck duties all day.
The Nomads kicked to the Uralla end and got goals fairly quickly. Fraser Menzies was wearing a heavy tag but still was able to get away from his opponents a number of times. The only problem was the delivery to him int he forward line which was often on his head instead of out front. Choco was continuing his form from the week before’s outing. Scores at the first change were Nomads 4.2.26 to the Saints 2.7.17.
The secnd quarter saw the Nomads assert their dominance. Hunter Greene was in particularly devastating form, breaking tackles in the mid-field and running amok on the western flank, delivering the ball deep into the Nomads forward line. Clarrie Barker was also breaking tackles and quickly running the ball forward. The Nomads kicked six goals for the quarter. Scores at half time were Nomads 10.7.67 to Inverell 4.6.30.
Perhaps the ease with which the Nomads scored in the second quarter led to some complacency since in the third quarter it was a very different game. The game became much closer by the end of the quarter with the Nomads on 11.9.75 to the Saints 8.11.59. A sixteen point lead.
The last quarter was a real torrid arm-wrestle but the Saints never got closer than the 16 point different at the final break. It wasn’t clear which way it would go but a goal assist from Hughie Weber to give Clarrie a chance at an open goal and the aforementioned goals from Fraser put the result beyond doubt. During this last quarter Noah Connick was brilliant, positioning himself every time to take the intercept mark. The work of his fellow backs was also exemplary.
It was a good win. The Nomads need to keep up this kind of form and to star to gell as a unit.
