Nomads men win last game of home and away
The New England Nomads won the last game of the home and away season convincingly against the Inverell Saints. Up forward Noah Connick (5 goals) and David “Modra” Richards (4 goals) were unstoppable. The mid-field of Clarrie Barker, Fraser Menzies, Tom Hunt and Charlie Paine were at their dynamic best. Conor Nest and Phill Mitchell were their usual rock solid selves. The team also welcomed Matt Pine—who has been around the club for a couple of years running Auskick—for his first game. It was also the last4 game for Ira Sulzberger who will be missed for his skills and continual ironic calls for us to enjoy ourselves. Final scores were Nomads 17.14.116 to 12.5.77.
So, this review is being written long after the season was called off prematurely to COVID advancing in the region. We were probably luck to get to play as much football as we did.
Anyroads, your correspondent’s memory of exactly what happened has faded a little, although he does remember it was a fairly spiteful game with not a lot of love lost between the two sides. The Nomads got off to a good start kicking to the Uralla end, kicking 6.3.39 to 2.1.19.
In the second quarter the Saints came back. Noah Connick was marking everything that came his way while Conor Nest was a very welcome return int he backline with his strong marking. At half time the scores were 8.6.54 to 6.2.38 – a little too close for comfort.
The third quarter was where the game was put to bed. The Nomads kicked 6 goals to have a 41 point lead at the final break. Scores were 14.8.92 to 8.3.51.
The final quarter was as they say in the classics junk time. The backline with Lindsay Brown, Phill Mitchell and Conor Nest were rock solid and Ethan Karpany (great to have Karpz in the colours again) added some grunt around the packs.
Overall it was a solid effort and the Nomads were very confident going into the finals. Our best side would undoubtedly have beaten anyone. Alas it was not to be. Congratulations to the Tamworth Roos who were deemed Minor Premiers after lots of Jesuitical argumentation about what would be the best thing to do
