Nomads forwards run amok out west
On Saturday the New England Nomads played good team football to beat the Moree Suns by 248 points. Zac Economou scored a bag of 11 on his birthday, while Nomads’ Big Dawg—Jed Ellis-Cluff—scored 7 and Modra kicked 6. The Nomads were dominant across the ground but in the midfield James Treweeke, Hamish Pearce, Clarrie Barker and Modra ensured that the ball was in the Nomads forward line for the majority of time. Velani Chakalisa was also a standout on the wing. The final score was 39.24.258 to 1.4.10.
The Nomads were a little late to arrive—tyre problems apparently—and the bus was well beaten in the race to Moree by the Starwagon and the Econovan.
Beautiful weather for football greeted the Nomads when they finally arrived. In the first quarter kicking North the Nomads scored 7 goals and there was some poor kicking. Hamish Pearce set the tone with his hard work at the contested ball and was working well with James Treweeke. Harry Wakefield was also causing the Suns backs trouble, while Zac was marking everything that came his way.
In the second quarter the Nomads were unstoppable and played good hard team football. The team kicked 10.8 for the quarter. Although they didn’t have a lot to do at times, the backs were excellent, repelling the ball quickly whenever it went into the Suns’ half, with Tom Hunt and Mitch Darton standouts. On the wing the flying albino, Luke Raymond was launching the ball into the Nomads forward line with his accurate kicking, hitting up the forwards a number of times. At the half time break the scores were 17.16.118 to 0.2.2.
The third quarter saw more of the same. The impressive thing in this quarter was the talk – there was also a lack of selfishness up forward. Players looked for the best option and did not blaze away which is a trap that is easy to fall into on a small ground. Tom Hunt took on ruck duties for most of this quarter, giving James a rest up forward and seemed to enjoy himself immensely teaming up well with Clarrie, Big Dawg Jed, Hammer and Modra. At the final change the scores were 26.20.176 to 1.3.9.
The final quarter saw the Nomads put the foot to the floor kicking 13 goals. Jed, Modra and Hamish were unstoppable in the midfield while Zac continued on his merry way finishing with 11. A grateful Jilbi nonchalantly kicked a couple from areas that were just within his range – while Frosty kept up his impressive record of not kicking a point all year with a mercurial snap from about 20 out.
Overall it was an excellent efforts. Well done to all the boys for playing team football. Also thanks to Tom Hunt for driving the bus home and ensuring everyone eventually got home.
Next week we play the Saints and it will be a big test. We need to keep up the same style of football if we are to continue on our winning ways.
Nomads Rascal of the Occasional Week
This week the award for Rascal of the Week goes to Isaac “what’s this button do”? Mestrom-Jones who, while in the main change rooms, pondered out loud what a seemingly insignificant switch might do if it was turned off – and lo-and-behold the main lights to the Bellevue Oval went out, leaving the Nomads training squad in pitch darkness. It was the first time in living memory that this has occurred. Surely there must be a limit to scientific inquisitiveness!
