Nomads triumph in the Wind
On a windy day at the Bellevue the Nomads beat an understrength Tamworth Roos by 64 points. It was a good solid team performance but standout players were Modra, Jed Ellis-Cluff, Matt Foley and Hamish Pearce. Zac, Jed and Modra kicked 3 goals up front from surprisingly few opportunities. Final scores were 12.19.91 to 3.9.27.
The Nomads has a fairly full group to choose from with most players being available, giving the selectors a few headaches. Pleasing to see a few ‘old’ faces like Phill Mitchell and Tim Keys back in the green guernseys. It was one of those days (typically which come in August) where the wind blows from the west and blows all day. The Nomads kicked to the Uralla end and had a great deal of the play but really failed to capitalise. The delivery into the forward line was not great. The Roos were also hard at there contests and making life harder for the Nomads forwards who have been used to having it their own way. Up back the Nomads were dominating with Tom Hunt and Mitch Darton leading the way. At the first break the scores were 2.5.17 to 0.4.4.
The second quarter saw more of the same. The Nomads seemed to have trouble getting it past the half forward line leaving Zac, Jed and Cammy with very few scoring opportunities. The other problem was the delivery. On a windy day it does not make much sense to bomb the ball high. At half time the scores were 5.7.37 to 1.7.13.
The third quarter saw a vast improvement in the Nomads’ play – though presumably the Roos who had a small bench were starting to tire. On the half back line, Matt Foley warming into his new position, gained possession after possession and with extreme accuracy picked out players on the wings and in the forward lines. Modra and Hammer also showed how to deliver the ball into the forward line hitting uo their targets. Tom Hunt and Mitch Darton dominated across the back-line and Phill Mitchell was winning the rucks. At the final change the scores were 9.12.66 to 2.8.20.
The final quarter saw more of the same with the Nomads pressing home their advantage. Zac took some strong marks and kicked truly. He and Mod were also involved in some kind of volleyball move that ended in the ball being bunted through – not sure what went on there. Overall it was a good effort. We have another week off and then play Inverell at home.
