Nomads on a roll

By Ellen Dunger (Armidale Express, 22/06/2016)
The New England Nomads continued to prove they are the team to beat in the Tamworth AFL competition with a dominant display against the Swans on Saturday.

On an unbeaten run: New England‘s Sam Bioletti races against Tamworth’s William Priest to take possession of the ball in the Nomads’ drubbing of the Swans at Bellevue Oval on Saturday afternoon.

In their first home game in a month, the Nomads started slow but regained their composure to control the remainder of the match.

Coach Jed Ellis-Cluff was happy with his side’s overall performance but believes a few errors early on prevented it from being perfect.

“The start of Saturday’s game we were quite sloppy in the first quarter,” he said.

“Just missing really easy hand balls again.

“The little short kicks but by the end of the game we weren’t missing any which was really pleasing to turn it around really quickly.

“We got steadily better as the game went on. Our last quarter would have been pretty good except we kicked 2.14 which is pretty poor.”

Zac Economou starred for the home team, kicking nine goals in the 157 points to 20 drubbing.  The Nomads host the third placed Gunnedah Bulldogs this Saturday who are coming off a big win.

Ellis-Cluff is wary this could be a dangerous match for his side.

“It should be a nice, hard game,” he said.

“They actually beat the Tamworth Roos by 70 points on the weekend so they are flying along at the moment so I think it will be a really tough game.

“It was last time we played them.

“The scoreline certainly didn’t reflect how close the game felt out there so I would expect more of the same this week.

“With a few less home games this year you lose a bit of a following but we have a few more coming in the back half of the year so hopefully people will be able to come down and support us.”

The match commences at 2pm at Bellevue Oval.
