Nomads post third win for the season at Tamworth #1
The New England Nomads won their third game for the year on Saturday with strong performances right across the park. For the Nomads, David ‘Modra’ Richards kicked 7 goals and Coach Economou 5, while Wulu Hall, Shannan MacDonald and Velani Chakalisa starred. The final margin was 133 points, the Nomads scoring 22.24 156 to 3.5.23.
The Nomads travelled down the hill to Tamworth on what turned out to be a perfect day for playing football. There were a few outs – with some stars missing, including Tom Hunt, Weston Whitby and Tom ‘Gleeso’ Granleese as well as the Dynamic Duo of Mark Spencer and Zac Old – but the team looked strong on paper. Modra won the toss (as seems to be his way) and kicked easterly with the wind. The Nomads posted a goal in the very first minute of the game and then another quickly followed. Jed Ellis-Cluff and Wulu Hall were starring in the midfield while Zac-the-Coach and Modra were causing headaches for the Swans’ backmen. Shannon MacDonald (the Macdon Lad) was also finding plenty of touches. The backline, ably led by Tim Keys, Hugh Cook, John Shirley and the Man from Ironbark (Phill Mitchell), were repelling any forward advances attempted by the Swans. To the backline’s credit, they kept the Swans scoreless for the first quarter. At the first change the Nomads had scored 6.6.42.
The second quarter saw the Nomads kicking into the breeze and having to adjust their playing style slightly. In this quarter Wulu Hall was very influential. He continually gained possession in the back half and redirected play to the Nomads advantage on the open flanks where ‘Sylvester’ Raymond and Shannon Macdonald made great use of their speed and agility to send the ball forward time and time again. Jed was enjoying his time in the middle, sitting much of the time a kick behind play and controlling the flow of the game. Chakalisa, enjoying being back in the Green and Black, was also in rare form. At half time the Nomads had kicked 10.10 70 to the Swans’ 1.2. 8.
In the third quarter the Nomads were once again kicking with the wind and took full advantage of it, scoring 9 goals. Modra by this time was unstoppable crumbing loose balls that drifted over the packs and Zac Economou was marking everything that came his way. The Galloping Gall, Andre Garraud, was also enjoying himself in this quarter patrolling the central regions of Number 1 Oval and in one very memorable moment kicked a fifty metre goal that perhaps even he didn’t quite believe. Shannon Macdonald, Wulu Hall and Luke Raymond also continued their excellent form in this quarter. At the final change the Nomads were leading by 114 points.
The final quarter saw the Nomads take the foot off the pedal to some extent, only scoring three goals (although admittedly bad kicking for goal did not help). A highlight of the quarter was the goal kicked by young Tom Lashlie in his first game. Tom has been around the club for a number of years and there was a great deal of cheering when the ball sailed through the big sticks. The final score was 22.24. 156 to 3.5. 23.
There were a number of pleasing features of the Nomads’ performance. One striking feature was the run of many of the younger players. Unlike the week before, the Nomads did not kick to packs but instead found space and placed the ball to the advantage of their wingers and onwards. The back line played exceptionally well. The overhead marking of forwards like Hayden Clarke, Zac Economou and jed Ellis Cluff was also impressive. Overall it was a very good effort on the part of the Nomads
