Nomads back in the winner’s circle: Weston bags a dozen or so
The second game of 2015 saw the Nomads travel up to Inverell for a grand final rematch. It was a different looking team from the previous week with a number of players returning as well as a number of players making their debut in the green.
However it was an old hand that turned on a show in the first quarter. Weston Whitby kicked a lazy 5 goals in the first quarter off the back of some hard work in the middle. The Nomads were playing hard footy, with the class of Jed and Matt Foley a welcome return in the middle. Down back the game was been controlled by the master and his apprentice with Gleeso and Phil Mitchell rebounding anything that made it the wrong side of halfway. A dominant performance by Weston and the midfield left the Nomads up by 31 points at quarter time.
The second quarter allowed a new look Inverell side back into the game, with a lack of hard running costing the Nomads. Again the Nomads were making the most of their opportunities but a lack of defensive running allowed the Inverell side to keep pace. Shannon Macdonald was one of few players to make the most of the space and broke the game open with a great run down the grandstand wing only to be pulled up for the unusual offence of having too many bounces. The combination of Hayden Clarke and Andrea Garraud was working well with the two big men presenting well and running hard. The attack on the ball by the Nomads was second to none with Liam Howard optimizing this and throwing himself head first into every contest.
The second half of the game was almost a lacklustre affair with the Nomads in control of the game. Weston continued his dominance down forward, while the midfield led by Modra continued to run hard and provide plenty of opportunities for the forwards. Jabez Tilto was also providing plenty of grunt through the middle with plenty of physicality and good ball use. Down back Snowy, Cooky and Clarrie were teaming up well, working off the two big men and moving the ball forward.
A highlight of the game was the work of the midfield and in particular an old and new hand in the ruck. Big Ompsy had a standout game, not only out of the middle but in general play around the ground. Throughout the game he was one of the few players who could consistently find space and made himself dangerous. In combination with Ompsy was debutant Tim “The Locksmith’ Keys who played a role through the middle, down back as well as up forward.
The final quarter saw the Nomads run out of the sheds with a 43 point lead, again hard work by the midfield and half forwards kept the ball in their attacking half for much of the quarter. Chaks, Dre, Jed and Pat O’Conell fought hard with Jed reaping the benefits of forward line pressure with a couple easy goals. Weston also fished off strong bagging his 11th or 12th for the game.
Well done to the first gamers, Liam Howard, Hayden Clarke, Tim Keys and Pat O’Conell. Also thanks to Brendon Nolan for his game day management and Tom Hunt for his help all day.
Special mention also needs to be given to Shane ‘Pigga” Snowden for collecting a pig on the way home. Not a good way to finish the day but thankfully no one was hurt.
