Nomads’ knockout blow
From the Armidale Independent, 23/07/2014
New England Nomads coach Zac Economou says his side played its best football of the year as it smashed the Kangaroos in the Tamworth AFL competition on Saturday.
The visitors won all four quarters to beat the Roos 17.15 (117) to 5.3 (38).
Mercurial small forward Dave Richards continued his stellar season to kick six goals for the Nomads, but it was his team-mates in the middle who did the damage.
“Our midfield really got on top of them,” Economou said.
“Zac Wells, Weston Whitby and Jon Freund dominated.”
Whitby, who was in some doubt to play after battling a hamstring strain, had the ball on a string.
The skipper racked up more than 30 possessions and had the Kangaroos struggling to keep up.
Tom Granleese and Economou ran a steady ship in defence, while Matt Foley and Matt Folpp did their bit up forward with three and two goals respectively.
The Nomads, who are undefeated this year, will look to keep their winning streak alive when they travel to Narrabri this Saturday.
The Eagles were beaten by 23 points against second-placed Inverell.
In the other TAFL match, the Tamworth Swans defeated Gunnedah by 17 points.
