Nomads kick on
By Ben Lonergan (Armidale Express, 28/05/2014)
The New England Nomads just keep racking up massive scores and four rounds into the Tamworth AFL league season, the Armidale sides are almost unbackable premiership favourites.
Gunnedah Bulldogs were the victim of the Nomads latest onslaught, a 222-29 flogging at Wolseley Oval in Gunnedah.
Dave Richards was again unstoppable as he booted an astonishing 13 maximums in the whitewash.
The Nomads created a huge buffer early and never looked back.
They led 46-9 after one quarter and 81-16 at half time, but the real damage was yet to come.
Eleven goals after the break resulted in a 69-point third quarter for the Nomads and they inflicted more pain in the final stanza with a 12 goal 72-point effort to extend the winning margin to almost 200 points.
Player-coach Zac Economou moved himself from the defensive line to full forward and booted four goals of the season.
“I’ve only kicked a handful of goals since I’ve been with the Nomads so it was good to get a couple,” he said.
Matt Foley continued his excellent start to the season with four more goals, while Isaiah Graham, Velani Chakalisa and Tom Hunt booted three each.
Economou said he was extremely happy with the dominant performance by his side.
“It was a good game by the boys,” he said.
“It was a hot day, big ground and soft surface, it was pretty hard to run on.
“By the third quarter they started to tire.”
Economou said Chakalisa, Foley and returning midfielder Mark Spencer were Nomads’ best on the day.
“Ryan Davies and Clarrie Barker both played well too,” Economou said.
“They’re both only 15 and were two of our best.”
