No mercy from Nomads

By Matt Nicholls (Armidale Independent, 14/05/2014)
New England Nomads showed no mercy on the Tamworth Swans as they drubbed their rivals by 200 points on Saturday.

In round two of the Tamworth AFL competition, the Nomads kicked 11 goals in the first quarter and 11 goals in the final term to win 35.15 (225) to 3.7 (25).

Matt Foley has made a fine start to his Nomads’ career

Nomads coach Zac Economou said his side was happy to take the points, but drew little satisfication from thrashing the Swans by such a big margin.

“We want the competition,” he said.

“No-one really enjoys winning like that.”

Apart from a lapse in the second quarter where players became “goal hungry”, the New England side put on a first-class performance at Bellevue Oval.

“We dropped off a little bit after quarter time and became lazy and goal hungry,” Economou said.

“But we switched back on and finished the game strongly.”

…as has Isaiah Graham.

Isaiah Graham was one of the Nomads’ best, kicking seven goals, while skipper Weston Whitby played a key role in setting up attacks.

“We won the contested ball well and rebounded pretty well off half back,” Economou said.

“Matt Folpp, in his first game for the club, had a good game down forward … all our forwards worked well together.”

Dave Richards was another standout, kicking eight goals.

The Nomads will face Inverell on the Saints’ home patch this Saturday in a replay of last year’s grand final.

“It should be a much more competitive game,” Economou said.

“The Saints had a good win on Saturday (defeated Gunnedah by 161 points).”
