Off to a flyer

The Nomads got off to a flying start in the 2014 TAFL competition, leaving Narrabri with a 19.18-132 to 6.9-45 victory.

New captain Weston Whitby kicked five goals, matched by first gamer Isaiah Graham, with Dave Richards (4), Cameron Graham (2), Tony Dickson, Tom Hunt and Shannon Macdonald also bagging goals.

The Nomads were a little slow to start with the Eagles providing stiff competition at the contests in the wet. Perhaps the thought was that kicking with the wind would mean that the goals would come by themselves Matt Foley however was everywhere right froth outset gathering more touches in the first ten minutes than some players garner in a whole game. The first few shots at goal were wayward but eventually Modra snapped truly and the Nomads were away. By the end of the quarter the Nomads were 30 points up.

The second quarter saw the Nomads kicking into the wind. Old-New boy Tommy Hunt was carving it up in the middle while the Graham boys (Isaiah and Cameron) were showing their opponents what influence speed can have on a game. Velani Chakalisa was reading the ball off the hands and dancing around opponents in his typical graceful fashion. All in all, the Nomads did well in this quarter, restricting the Eagles scoring in the wind, let down only by two late goals on the siren from the Eagles.

It was the third quarter which sealed it, with the Nomads kicking 49 points for the quarter. The Nomads kicked long and int he forward line Weston Whitby, Modra and Isaiah Graham were virtually unstoppable. Matt Foley was everywhere and Frosty was his usual energetic sense running forward at full pace. expecting the ball to go with him, and by a miracle of local science it seemed to do so. Zac Economou was a tower of strength in the backbone and Tom Granleese good some timely marks (as well as launching a few less than graceful- but still ffecitve-torries). In this quarter Shannon Macdonald also made his presence known with his penetrating left foot kicks providing plenty of opportunities in the forward line

In the final quarter against the wind the nomads kicked a further 5 goals and made sure that there was no chance of the Eagles staging a fightback with the wind.

It was a very pleasing effort and congratulations to all of the new boys who excelled in their first outing with the Nomads.

Elsewhere, the Roos and Saints also had comfortable victories.
