Cardiff wins the Tablelands Cup
On Saturday the Nomads played host to the Cardiff Hawks, Maitland Saints, Sawtell Saints and Wyong Magpies for the playing of the 2013 Tablelands Cup sponsored by UNE.
In warm conditions the teams battled it out in hard-fought but good-natured matches to see who would take home the coveted cup. In the end it was the Cardiff Hawks from Newcastle who went undefeated throughout the day to claim the trophy and the prize money. The hawks showed their class to dominate most of their matches and show why they have been a dominant force in the Black Diamond AFL for the last 15-20 years.
Star of the day was Cardiff full forward Mick Ryan who was voted Most Valuable Player by the umpires, although many Cardiff players performed admirably including veteran forward Brendan Wold and captain Liam Gibson.
The Nomads performed well throughout the day and used the matches to give a number of new players an opportunity to impress the clubs match committee and coach Tom Granleese. Of the new players Zac Wells and Harry Fruend put in strong performances whilst established players Riley Connor, Zac Economou and Jon Fruend played well throughout the day. It was also pleasing to see Nomad favourite Omphile Temoso back in the famous green guernsey and dominating in the ruck contests.
After an extremely successful Tablelands Cup the club will now focus it’s attention to defending their 2012 premiership and that will all start Saturday 13/4/2013 in Tamworth against the Tamworth Swans whilst the first home game and the raising of the premiership flag will be on 20/4/2013 against the Inverell Saints in a rematch of the 2012 grand final.
