Sweet Revenge for Nomads
Heading into Saturday’s match the Tamworth Swan’s were the only team in the TAFL to have defeated the Nomads this season when they accounted for an under strength Nomads side in round one. As such the New England boys were very motivated to turn the tables this time round and this is exactly what they did.
The first quarter was as expected a closely fought affair with both sides trying to assert the early ascendency. The Nomads however were a little off their game which allowed the Swans to launch numerous attacks and only wayward kicking prevented them from skipping away to an early lead. The Nomads however settled and were much more accurate in front of goal and ended the quarter with 4 goals and a 21 point lead.
The second quarter saw a similar pattern to the first with Tamworth enjoying an even amount of the possession and posting two goals, however the Nomad midfield of Cameron Grigg, Dave Graan, Jon Fruend and Benji Julien were starting to seize control allowing Dave Richards to assert his class in the forward line and the Nomads put three of their own goals through to take a 29 point lead into the half time break.
Whilst leading comfortably coach Tom Granleese was less than satisfied with the Nomads first half performance and pleaded with his charges to dominate the second half. His requestes were well heeded and the Nomads took control in the ‘premiership’ quarter. As they pushed hard with their relentless running the Tamworth boys were starting to tire and the Nomads piled on 5 third quarter goals to open their lead up to 56 points.
With the game now out of the grasp of the Swans the final quarter was always going to be a challenge for them to stop the rampant Nomad running game and the Nomads with the smell of a large victory in their noses inflicted more pain. Eight final quarter goals saw the final margin stretch out to a comprehensive 103 point victory to the home side. Dave (Modra) Richards was the star of the day with eight goals of his own, whilst Ash Cruikshank and Simon Stubbs did well to finish with three each. Whilst all the Nomads played well particularly strong performances were put in by Lachy McLeod, Velani Chuckalisa, Dave Graan, Cameron Grigg and Jon Fruend.
