Nomads Dampen Kangaroos Spirits
The Nomads have won their second game of the season defeating defending premiers the Tamworth Kangaroos by 52 points at Bellevue Oval. In very wet and cold conditions the Nomads were led well by new coach Tom Granleese, club stalwart Weston Whitby and on baller Dave Graan.
The match commenced with both sides heavily contesting the ball, it was the Nomads however who edged away late in the quarter to take an eight point lead into quarter time. The Kangaroos came out fighting in the second quarter applying plenty off pressure on the Nomads defence however the back line stood strong with Granleese, Hugh Cook and Nathan Lambie relentlessly repelling the Roos attacks on goal. With full forward Simon Stubbs and new recruit Shaun Cusack at centre half forward providing strong targets for the Nomads, live wire Dave Richards was able to capitalise and the Nomads headed into half time with a six point lead.
At half time coach Granleese reminded his charges that the ‘hard work’ was only half done and with a repeat of the first half performance a victory was within reach. It certainly worked as the Nomads dominated the third quarter. Ruckman Cameron Grigg dominated at the centre clearances giving first use of the football to on ballers Dave Graan and Jon Fruend who continually drove the ball long into the Nomad attacking zone. By three quater time the lead had opened up to 36 points and the Nomads were well on top. In the final quarter the Nomads continued their domination with Jon Frost and Matt Woodward providing plenty of drive through the middle of ground and the Kangaroos were no match for the Nomads with the later running out convincing 52 point winners.
