Nomads sitting pretty
From the Armidale Express, 04/07/2011
The New England Nomads produced one of their biggest scores to spank Narrabri by 109 points at Bellevue on Saturday. The Nomads ran hot all around the ground to crush the visitors 27-14 176 to 10-7 67.
The win left them sharing top spot in the Essential Energy Tamworth Australian Football League competition with Tamworth Kangaroos.
Having beaten the Roos a week earlier, the Nomads have become the team to beat this season.
Coach Brendan Meehan was understandably delighted with the performance.
“They improved even further on their win over the Roos, did all the hard work and were rewarded for it,” he said.
“The teamwork was great, every player put in and we got the result we were after.”
The win gave the Nomads some revenge for their narrow loss to the Eagles in the opening game of the season in Narrabri.
Leading scorer Weston Whitby celebrated his 50th game with seven goals, but even he had to play second fiddle to Dave Richards, who put 13 through the big sticks.
“Dave showed everyone just what he can do – scoring 13 goals says it all,” Meehan said.
He was just as pleased with his defence and midfield.
“The ball out of the middle was really good, we controlled it all day, and every player in the backline beat his opponent,” he said.
While agreeing it was hard to single out players in such a decisive win, Meehan mentioned Tom Walsh across the backline, Adrian Walsh and John Frost in the middle, and Richards up front.
Given that the Nomads are obviously on a roll, the coach said it was almost a shame that they have the bye next weekend.
“But we’ve got a few niggling injuries, so it will give these guys the chance to rest up and get over them,” he said.
Goalscorers for the Nomads were: D Richards 13, W Whitby 7, D Perry 2, H Ross 2, J Wright, C Dobos, A Walsh.
Other results: Inverell Saints 18-13 121 d Muswellbrook Cats 13-12 90, Gunnedah Bulldogs 15-9 99 d Tamworth Swans 12-12 84.
Table: New England Nomads 20, Tamworth Kangaroos 20, Inverell Saints 16, Gunnedah Bulldogs 16, Narrabri Eagles 16, Tamworth Swans 4, Muswellbrook Cats 4.

Good to see the team put in a performance worthy of Weston’s fiftieth game. Congratulations, Weston.
And very well played everybody. Keep up the good work.
