Nomads kick off season with cup

Bellevue Oval will be action packed this weekend.
The New England Nomads are hosting their annual tablelands cup at their home ground on Saturday and will be fielding two teams against visiting sides Port Macquarie Magpies and Nambucca Valley Lions.
The second side the Nomads will field will add a touch of nostalgia to the weekend, with the club dusting off their old New England Wanderers uniforms for their second side to play in.
This year’s cup will see the four teams play in a round robin format with the winning team being the side who has accumulated the most points at the end of the day.
Nomads club representative Ben Page said the club is looking forward to the cup and to the upcoming season having recruited well over the summer.
“We’ve got quite a few new players this year,” he said.
“We’re looking strong at the moment which is exciting.”
The club will hold a special function on Saturday night at the Wicklow for all attending players as well as securing a full bar, canteen and barbecue facilities for spectators and players on the day.
Also held at Bellevue during the cup will be the local Auskick sign up day for 5-12 years olds, starting at 10am, Page telling The Express that the kids competition is always fun for all.
“The beauty of Auskick is its not that ruthless in that if you have a three or four year old you think can kick with the five year olds then they can play, the same goes say if you’ve got a 13 year old, as long as they’re not goliaths that may hurt the other kids they can also play.”
With an influx of new players Page said the Cup is the best way for the club to get the season rolling.
“There’s about 20 new players this year, it might take them a while to gel, but we’ve picked up players in key positions which is the main thing.”
