Nomads hop past Roos to final spot
By Josh Paterson (Armidale Express, 30/08/2010)
The New England Nomads have booked themselves a preliminary final berth against the Tamworth Kangaroos after despatching the Tamworth Swans with a six goals to two final quarter in Tamworth yesterday.
The Nomads went into their minor semi looking to bounce back from a 74-point drubbing at the hands of the Gunnedah Bulldogs last week.
And bounce back they did, running out winners 16.14.110 to 12.14.86.
Most of the damage was done in a blistering fourth quarter after only a point separated the sides at three-quarter time, in a game that seesawed for the majority.
Nomads coach Brendan Meehan was full of praise for his team’s turnaround in performance.
“It was very pleasing to see the way they attacked the ball and the way they showed more intensity and used each other as a team,” he said.
Star forward Weston Whitby led the way up front, kicking six goals, while Meehan said Gavin Nelson was brilliant defensively.
“Gavin Nelson was great, he was tagging the Swans’ Gavin Knee, who usually gets about four goals a game and he didn’t get any.”
Meehan said his midfield led by ruckman and captain Nick Schultz worked hard in securing possession.
“Our midfield had a real good day, they won most contests in the middle and when the Swan’s did get it they shut them down quickly,” he said.
Meehan also had high praise for his defenders contribution to the victory.
“Kenneth Clayton at the back was good, he just fought hard all day.
“Matthew Bourke helped us get some run out of the back and create some chances up front.”
The Nomads have been unable to beat the Kangaroos in their regular season matches this year but Meehan said should his side produce a similar performance to Saturday’s they were a definite chance.
The winners of next week’s preliminary final in Tamworth will play the Inverell Saints in the grand final the following week.

Weird headline. Hopefully they’ll be able to re-use it next week.
Great result. Go Nomads!
