Nomads surge to victory
From the Armidale Express, 21/06/2010
Livewire forwards Weston Whitby and Johnathon Frost turned the game on its head in the final stanza, with the Nomads overrunning the visiting Eagles at Bellevue Oval.
Coach Brendan Meehan was a relieved man on Saturday night.
“It was a tough game and they’ve got some good players. It was just good to get the points,” he said.
New England started the game strongly to lead by 15 points at the first break, but a dominant second quarter gave Narrabri a handy buffer at half time.
Meehan said the Nomads’ performance in the second half was ‘pleasing’.
“Obviously we didn’t want to be in the position we were in at half time but all the boys lifted when the game was up for grabs,” he said.
“The last quarter they were switched on and ate into the deficit quickly.”
Meehan said Frost was his side’s standout player, but reserved mentions for Hamish Pearce, Clint Ballagh and Whitby.
The final score was 11.13 (79) to 8.16 (66).
New England travel to Gunnedah this Saturday in what could be a season defining match.
A victory against the Bulldogs would all but guarantee the Nomads a place in the finals.
Gunnedah, also playing for a place in the final, are sure to come out firing after they were hammed by 158 points against Inverell on Saturday.
In the other match on the weekend, Muswellbrook were beaten by 91 points against the Tamworth Kangaroos.
