Tablelands Cup, Day 2: the cup goes to North Coffs
The 2010 Tablelands Cup was won by North Coffs Kangaroos on Sunday, defeating the Nomads by nine points in the final. Earlier in the day, New England had a four point victory over the Roos in their round-robin meeting, but couldn’t quite get over the line against them in the afternoon.
The Nomads lead at half-time in the final, but tired limbs seemed to tell as the Roos were able to move the ball freely for a period of the second half which saw them take the lead. Despite a late rally the Nomads were unable to claw back the deficit and lost 5.1 (31) to 6.4 (40).
Despite losing the final, the weekend was very productive for the Nomads having played a good standard of football against decent opposition and integrated a number of new players into the squad.
In the other round-robin match played Inverell Saints had a comfortable victory against the Nambucca Valley Lions in their round-robin match. The two sides decided against playing again in the third-fourth place play-off.
Weston Whitby picked up the Best and Fairest for the weekend. The medal was closely contested with three or four players still in with a shout going in to the Grand Final.
The new UNE Vice-Chancellor and Nomads patron, Prof. Jim Barber, made the presentations to round off the weekend.
The club are grateful to everybody that contributed to making the tournament a great success over the weekend.
Sunday’s results:
Nomads | 5.8 (38) | def. | Roos | 5.4 (34)
Saints | 7.8 (50) | def. | Lions | 4.4 (28)
