Stellar year recognised

Weston Whitby has been kicking goals left, right and centre this season and the weekend was no different.

In addition to kicking four majors in the New England Nomads’ win over the Gunnedah Bulldogs, Whitby was named the Tamworth Australian Football League’s (TAFL) leading scorer for the 2008 season.

Whitby kicked 61 goals during the regular season, and it was a record haul of 19 against the Muswellbrook Cats last month that got him over the line for the accolade.

He kicked a phenomenal 19-6-120 in that match.

Nomads coach Brendan Meehan said Whitby’s, who also played for the club in 2006, season could have been even better.

“If he’d been 100 per cent fit anything could have happened,” he said.

“He missed a few games through injury and other reasons earlier in the season.

“He’s really had a good year and has been improving all the time.”

The TAFL competition has a week off this weekend before the finals kick off on Saturday week.

The Nomads will once again face Gunnedah, this time at Bellevue Oval, while the Tamworth Kangaroos face the Saints in Inverell in the major semi-final.

“We beat them at their home ground by about four goals at the weekend,” Meehan said.

“Hopefully we can improve more on that and keep building on from the first match of the finals.”
