Weston Whitby lines up yet another shot on goal.

Numerous New England Nomads received recognition at the Tamworth AFL awards night over the weekend. The first award was awarded to Mr. Ron Crump as the greatest volunteer to AFL in the North West region. Ronnie will now be pooled against other regional winners in both statewide and then national awards ceremonies.

Next awards were made to the six Nomads selected into the TAFL representative side for the Regional Championships in Wagga Wagga in June. The six were Clint Ballagh, Jonathon Frost, Dave MacLellan, Glen Northway (Captain of TAFL), Anthony Reid and Weston Whitby.

Then after a long and close competition, Weston Whitby won the Gerry Griffiths Medal for most goals in the 2008 regular season. Weston is pictured above lining up for a goal in Tamworth against the Roos. Weston received thunderous applause from a well represented and quite vocal Nomads contingent, the medal and the Sherrin that he used to kick a league record 19 goals on August 2nd.

Finally, in the main vote count, Clint Ballagh’s early season form was recognised as he topped the vote count for the New England Nomads. While the Nomads were off the pace in terms of League Best & Fairest – but as Babe Ruth once said “The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime”. It was an interesting vote count as the Nomads finished 3rd on the TAFL ladder, but received only 41 votes. The Tamworth Swans finished fifth on the ladder for 43 votes and the Bulldogs finished fourth and received 48 votes. The Nomad votes were awarded as follows: Clint Ballagh 9, Weston Whitby 8, Anthony Reid 6, Rich Malone 5, Matt Maxwell 5, Dave MacLellan 4, Caleb Dobos 3 and Glen Northway 1
