The New England Nomads are heading into the final games of the Tamworth AFL (TAFL) season with a strong resolve and fighting chance.
After a few weeks of dwindling numbers, the end of the university holidays has seen an end to their losses.
The Nomads met with the Tamworth Swans over the weekend and fought their way to a 73-72 victory.
“We’ve got our full team back after the breaks so the boys, after the first quarter, started to really work well together a lot better,” Nomads coach Brendan Meehan said.
“They were working really well as a team. It happened in spasms but it got more and more as the game went on which was good.”
The Nomads had secured a five point lead at quarter time, but were unable to hold onto it going into the second and third quarters. It wasn’t until the final quarter that they kicked a behind to bring them up to their one point lead.
Meehan said that it was a ‘hard fought out game’ and named Reece Whitby, John Frost, David MacLellan and Anthony Reid among the key players of the match.
The win means that the Nomads are a little closer to securing a place in the finals.
“There’s only a couple more games before the finals and that sort of consolidated our place.”
Next week they are set to meet with Muswellbrook in Tamworth.
“We should go well. Muswellbrook have struggled all year with numbers, so with our full team I believe we should go very well and have a good win,” Meehan said.
“No game is easy, but it should be a good game and we should come away with a good win.”
