Rusty Nomads still get away with the points in Tamworth

By James Polson (Armidale Express, 16/06/2008)
A ‘flat’ New England Nomads outfit did enough to come away with a 20-point win over the Tamworth Swans in their round eight clash in the country music capital on Saturday.

The Nomads went in two points down after the first quarter but led at the remaining breaks to record a 11-9-75 to 8-7-55 win.

Captain Glen Northway was the best with the boot for the Armidale side, slotting four goals, while Dylan McGrath was right behind him with three majors.

Rich Malone bagged a double and Edward Nixon and Anthony Reid scored one each.

Coach Brendan Meehan said Northway and McGrath were among the best for the Nomads.

“Caleb Dobos was one of our best with Clint Ballagh, they’d be our two outstanding players for the day,” he said.

“It was good to have a win but it could have been better.

“We did enough to win but some things just couldn’t get going, we did enough to win but that’s about it.

“We were just a bit flat.”

The Nomads travel to Muswellbrook this weekend to take on the cellar-dwelling Cats.

Another win would build momentum for the club with a number of players absent through university holidays.

“It was good to get a win before the holidays start,” Meehan said.

“We’re still looking at good numbers again for next week though, but we’re starting to get more and more non-university fellows involved.”

Despite not being entirely satisfied with his side’s performance Meehan said there were good signs for the Nomads.

“To play the way we did and still come away with the win is encouraging though,” he said.

“If we can the boys to start trusting each other and working as a team they’ll beat anyone in the comp no worries at all.”

The other two matches resulted in big wins to Inverell and the Kangaroos.

A poor conversion rate meant Gunnedah were no match for the defending premiers Inverell, going down 18-15-123 to 7-17-59, while the Kangaroos made it seven on the trot with a 78-point win over Muswellbrook.

    Nomads,

A win is a win and congratulations to the boys who played well. Once again it seems to be a very interrupted season but the most important time is the end of the season.Brendan will want all of you firing together.

All the best, it is great to be able to read the results on the web.
