Nomads stay in touch with Saints
From the Armidale Express, 20/08/2007
The New England Nomads acquitted themselves well against the Tamworth Australian Football League leaders the Inverell Saints at Bellevue Oval on Saturday.
In a match many expected the Saints to completely dominate as they have done for just about the entire season, the end result was 14-9-93 to 9-5-59.
The Nomads got away to a great start, booting four goals to two in the first quarter and going into the break leading the visitors by 11 points.
The Armidale side continued their dominance in the second quarter, adding three goals and two behinds to retain a nine point lead at the main break.
It was the third quarter that ultimately cost the Nomads the match, with the Inverell side kicking 4-1-25 to the Nomads paltry 0-1-1.
New England never stopped trying in the final quarter but their two goals were no match for the five-goal haul put on by the Saints and the result was a 34 point win to the Inverell team.
Nate Munro booted three goals for the Saints, and Mick Viney and Jason Gibbert each scored twice, while the most prolific of the Nomads’ scorers was Jay Dunlop who put four through the middle sticks.
Best on ground for the Saints and Nomads was awarded to Stuart Walker and Hamish Robertson respectively.
The Nomads take on the Tamworth Kangaroos at home next week, while the Saints have a week off through the bye.
