Round 9: Nomads go down in Tamworth
The New England Nomads up and down season continued with a defeat to the Tamworth Swans at Tamworth No.1 Oval on Saturday. The Swans lead throughout to finish as winners by 17.18 (120) to 10.9 (69).
In the first weekend of the university vacation, the under-strength Nomads side put in a disappointing performance against a Swans side that ran and competed all afternoon. Too many times New England were under-manned at the contests and too loose in their marking duties.
There were a few notable performances for the Nomads. Asked to do a tagging job in the second half, Reece Whitby successfully shut down one of the Swans danger men. Anthony Reid dominated in the ruck and Matt Dennis caused problems up front and picked up two goals.
However, while everyone on the pitch was clearly putting in the effort, the Nomads rarely produced the type of running football that they aim for, making basic mistakes under the pressure exerted by their opponents.
The goalscorers for the Nomads were Richie Malone (2 goals), Matt Dennis (2), Anthony Alderuccio, Anthony Reid, Ben Page, Jay Dunlop, Andrew Harvey and James Downie.
