Grand Final: Swans take the premiership
The Tamworth Swans finished the 2006 TAFL season as premiers, taking out the Grand Final 12.10 (82) to the Nomads 8.10 (58).
While New England struggled to achieve any fluency and control of the game, credit has to be given to the Swans for the pressure they maintained throughout the match. In particular, they filled their defensive 50 to prevent Glen Northway and Weston Whitby from getting the space that they exploited to great effect in the major semi-final.
Some of the Nomads’ problems from earlier in the season, poor decision making and wasting posession, were in evidence again in the Grand Final. It is hard to tell how much of this was due to the Swans pressure, but the end result was a disjointed New England performance with no real flow.
The goal kickers for the Nomads were Weston Whitby (4), Gus McKenzie, Glen Northway, Joel Webber and Warwick Richardson.
The Nomads best players were Tom Hunt, Richard Malone, Daniel Drum, Brendan Meehan, Glen Northway and Weston Whitby.
A disappointing end to a Nomads season in which a strong club spirit has been in evidence both on and off the field. Although there will be a fair turnover of players before next season, if this spirit can be maintained the club can continue to flourish next year.
In the Under 16 Grand Final, the Inverell Saints romped home with a very impressive display against the Tamworth Kangaroos. The improvement in the standard of play in the junior division this season has been marked and augurs well for the future of the game in New England.
From the point of view of junior development in Armidale, Grand Final day was another success. Craig Collins organised a match between The Armidale School and a team playing under the Nomads banner as the day’s curtain raiser, and an Auskick game for half time in the senior Grand Final. Both games were played in a good spirit and with a good deal of skill.
