Nomads on the ropes after a trouncing in Tamworth
From the Armidale Express, 24/07/2006.
The New England Nomads are hanging on to a finals spot by their fingernails after Saturday’s crushing loss to the Tamworth Kangaroos.
The Nomads went down 14.12.96 to 7.9.51, and are equal with the fifth placed Muswellbrook Cats on 22 points.
The Nomads maintain their spot in the top four by virtue of their superior for and against record, but with two rounds to go before the finals, the Nomads must win both games to be sure of a spot in the postseason.
The Nomads travelled to Tamworth looking for a win to halt their recent slide, and lead at the first break 2.1.13 to 0.4.4, but were unable to maintain the lead, managing only two behinds in the second quarter and allowing the Roos to take a 23 point lead.
The news didn’t get much better for the Nomads in the third, as they managed only one goal and three behinds to the Roos three goals, but in the fourth, the Armidale side put in four goals to finish strongly.
Warwick Richardson scored three goals for the Nomads, and was joined on the score sheet by Glen Northway who bagged a brace, as well as Jack Sartor and Adrian Walsh.
Perennial star man Tom Hunt was the best on ground for the visitors, and was backed up by Brendan Meehan, Anthony Reid, Ben Horne, Glen Northway and Anthony Fisher.
Hunt is also in the running for the best and fairest playing prize, and if the Nomads can get some more players on the park after the University break, the whole team may be in line for a trophy in the next few weeks.
