Four Nomads to play in inter-league tournament
From the Armidale Express, 09/06/2006
Four New England Nomad players will represent the Tamworth AFL at an inter-league carnival in Inverell this weekend.
Tom Hunt, John Mayer, Richard Malone and Weston Whitbey will play for TAFL against teams from the Mid North Coast and Far North Coast competing for the AFL Inter-league Shield.
The NSW/ACT AFL Northern NSW Inter-league Carnival will be contested at Inverell’s Varley Oval tomorrow and Sunday.
The competition has been running for more than 10 years and was last hosted by Tamworth AFL five years ago.
AFL North Coast have won the last seven shields, however Northern NSW AFL area manager Chris McKinley expects the competition to be evened up by the fact that both the Far North Coast and Tamworth AFL have experienced strong growth in the past 18 months.
McKinley has predicted the TAFL will be hard to beat this weekend.
The tournament will be run in a round robin format tomorrow with the first game at 1.30pm, the final to be played at midday on Sunday.
McKinley says the best players in Northern NSW will be on display and says the AFL association is keen to see the game grow in the Inverell region.
The gates at Varley Oval will open at 12.30pm tomorrow and 10.30am Sunday.
Tomorrow will see Tamworth AFL v AFL North Coast at 1.30pm, Summerland AFL v AFL North Coast 2.30pm and Summerland AFL v Tamworth AFL 3.30pm.
The final will be played at midday on Sunday.
