By Tony Clarke (Armidale Express, 22/05/2006)
Tamworth saw some representative magic on the weekend when it hosted the Tamworth AFL City v Country matches.
Both juniors and seniors played exciting, physical encounters, and several players from Armidale were involved in the senior encounter.
The match also doubled as a selection trial for the TAFL squad for 2006, and there was more than one Nomad on the team sheet at the end of the day.
Tom Hunt, John Mahy, Richard Malone and Weston Whitby all made the cut for the squad after impressing for Country, with Hunt in particular putting in a now-usual superb performance.
Whitby was also named as one of the besst on the ground.
Country were the losers in a high scoring encounter, but were able to wrest back control of the match after City scored nine goals in the second quarter.
Country fought back by scoring 11 goals in the second half but couldn’t close the gap, losing 21-9-135 to 18-14-122.
The full TAFL squad is captained by Adam White from Muswellbrook, with Mark Wardley from the Tamworth Swans the vice-captain.
The side will be coached by Wayne Campbell.
The full squad is Adam White, Mark Wardley, Shaun Mainsbridge, Richard Malone, Fraser Hughes, Steve Mullane, Scott Hardy, Luke McGrath, Weston Whitby, Danny Swain, John Mahy, Cameron Douglas, Paul Tapper, Luke Selig, Ashley Braun, Col Daye, Mark Burrow, Gavin Knee, Tom Hunt, Dwayne Shawcross, George Massa, Damien Wendt, Daniel Quinn, John Woolaston, Richard Crafter, Damien Buchanan, Ryan McEvoy, Dan Overeem, John Robinson and Luke Ferguson.
