Cats and Roos post big wins in round two
From the Armidale Express, 03/05/2006
The second round action in the Tamworth Australian Football League competition saw the Muswellbrook Cats and Tamworth Kangaroos post big victories.
Meanwhile, the Tamworth Swans came away with points in a tighter match with the Inverell Saints.
The Inverell Saints travelled to Tamworth’s No.1 Oval as part of a double header weekend for the Tamworth clubs, taking on the Tamworth Swans.
The Swans started well and held the lead at each break. The Saints got close with a late surge in the third and final quarter, but the Swans outlasted them to take the points, winning 9-14-68 to 7-14-56.
Best players for Tamworth were Gavin Knee, with three goals, Mark Wardley, Lockie Rowlings and Alan O’Keefe.
For the Saints, John Elphick, Ash Braun, Mick Viney, Tony Halloran and Brendan Anderson all performed.
The Tamworth Kangaroos took on the Narrabri Eagles in the second double header game at No.1 Oval and again proved too strong across the park for their opponents winning 18-9-117 to 3-10-28.
Starting strongly the Roos led each quarter and had really run away with the game by halftime. The Eagles seemed to have some scoring opportunities, but could only post three majors.
Geordie Akeroyd managed five for the Roos while Col Daye, Damien Buchanan and Daniel Ray all stood out on the field.
Dwayne Shawcross, Daniel Hughes, Mark Barrow and Dave Lewis were the best on the day for Narrabri.
The final game saw the white hot Musewellbrook Cats kick off their premiership defence with a big win over an under-strength Gunnedah Bulldogs at Werriman Field in Muswellbrook, booting 20-12-132 to 2-3-15.
In wet and slippery conditions the Cats dominated the ball and converted almost every scoring opportunity, while shutting out the Dogs equally as efficiently.
The Dogs did not lack effort but were simply outclassed by the well-drilled Cats.
Ryan McEvoy booted 10 goals for the Cats while Adam White put over four.
Best for the doggies were Paul Parkes, Dean Foley and Gary Briggs.
