Battle for supremacy

There might still be four rounds remaining in the Tamworth AFL, but it appears the host of the September 5 major semi-final will be decided tomorrow.

Runaway competition leaders New England Nomads and Tamworth Kangaroos will clash at Bellevue Oval in a top of the table blockbuster.

“It’s a huge game for both teams,” Nomads player-coach Zac Economou said. “The way it’s looking the winner will get that home semi, which is a huge advantage.”

The Nomads have won 13 straight games following their opening round loss to the Kangaroos, and would appear to be heavy favourites at home against the Kangaroos this weekend, but Economou isn’t so sure. “The Roos play well at Bellevue,” he said.

“You only have to look at round one to see that, they belted us here.

“And then it was a very tough contest down there in round eight.”

Economou and his men have racked up huge scores at will in recent weeks to carry red-hot form into the top of the table clash.

“We have played good footy in the past month,” the Nomads coach said. “The competition hasn’t been that strong, but I’m happy with the way we have been playing.

“I can’t ask any more than that.”

The competition’s two highflying sides play contrasting styles of Aussie Rules, which should make for a scintillating contest for spectators on Saturday.

Tamworth’s tight, physical play will test the Nomads renowned expansive game.

“Our intensity around the packs will need to pick up against the Roos,” Economou said.

“It’s important for us to match them physically.”

Goal-kicking phenom Dan Overeem and middle lynchpin Matt Hodge have been singled out by Economou as the two Roos his side needs to shut down.

“Dan Overeem is very dangerous up forward,” he said.

“He’s been kicking bags of goals.

“Matt Hodge has been a fantastic player for a number of years.

“He controls the game so well.”

In a huge boost for the Armidale club, the Nomads will field their strongest squad of the year on Saturday.
