The Tamworth Kangaroos were no match for the New England Nomads in the Armidale sides’ final tune-up before they host the Tamworth AFL major semi-final in Armidale this weekend.

A slow start may have been the only negative the Nomads brought away from the 103-78 win at Bellevue Oval.

The Tamworth side led 22-15 after the first quarter, but the Nomads kicked into gear in the second period.

They booted five goals to take a 49-35 lead into the main break.

Four more goals in both the third and fourth quarters enabled the Nomads to cruise to victory.

Player-coach Zac Economou said he was thrilled with the way his side responded to a first quarter deficit.

“The Kangaroos came out well,” he said.

“We were under a bit of pressure early.

“But the boys responded.

“It was one of the best games we’ve played all year in terms on intensity.”

The Kangaroos came into the match off the back of a big win over the Inverell Saints, the side the Nomads will take on in the major semi this weekend.

“We knew we were going to have to play well to beat them,” Economou said.

“It was a good result for us leading into the finals.”

Zac Wells, Tom Hunt and Wulu Hall were all in fine form for the Nomads.

Skipper Weston Whitby kicked five more goals to go with four to Dave Richards and three to Economou.

“Weston was going to have a rest, but he ended up playing,” Economou said.

“But even when he’s not 100 per cent he still plays well.”
