Walsh chips in for Nomads win

By Matt Nicholls (Armidale Independent, 25/06/2014)
New England Nomads stalwart Adrian Walsh turned back the clock with a vintage crumbing goal in his 150th senior match on Saturday.

The veteran forward celebrated his milestone with a 47-point win as the Nomads defeated the Swans in Tamworth.

Back in his native state of Victoria, playing 150 games is not considered much of a feat in country football, but Walsh became the first Nomad to reach the mark on Saturday.

“We just don’t play as many games up here as we do down there,” he said.

“Back in Victoria you could play 22 home-and-away games and a couple more if you played finals.

“Here there have been seasons where you only play 13 or 14 games.”

It was fitting that Walsh, who is in his late forties, kicked a goal in the Nomads’ win.

“You could call it crumbing goal,” Walsh said with a smile.

The one-time star centre-half forward estimated he had played around 500 senior games of football, mostly in the Wimmera region of Victoria, but also in the amateurs in Adelaide.

Since the UNE professor made the move to Armidale, he has entrenched himself into the local football scene.

He is not only president of the Nomads, but also the head of the Tamworth AFL competition.

Walsh said much had changed since he first pulled on the boots for New England.

“The standard of football is so much higher now,” he said.

“The good sides especially are so much better.”

The Nomads set up Saturday’s win against the Swans with a strong opening quarter.

The visitors, without playing coach Zac Economou, kicked 6.5 to 2.2 to open proceedings with a bang.

From there, the Nomads kept the Tamworth side at arm’s length, winning 14.12 (96) to 7.7 (49).

Captain Weston Whitby, who was carrying a hamstring strain, booted five goals, while Tom Granleese, Velani Chakalisa and Tom Hunt were strong contributors.

Economou returns for New England this Saturday as the Nomads host Inverell in a top-of-the-table clash.
