Nomads mauled by the Bulldogs

Gunnedah shocked New England 131 (19.17) – 106 (16.10) at Wolseley Oval on Saturday to hand the Nomads their second defeat of the season.

The Bulldogs came into the match with a poor record of just two victories from nine rounds but they quickly set about dominating a lacklustre Nomads side.

Gunnedah took an early lead in the first qurter and withstood a barrage of goals from their opponents after half-time to win by a comfortable margin.

Nomads coach Tom Granleese said his team was punished for their disorganised approach to the match.

“Our preparation for the game was really bad, we only got there about 20 minutes before kick-off and had a really slow start to the game,” he said.

“It’s a match we could have won, but there might have been a bit of complacency from our boys since they (Gunnedah) haven’t been doing too well this season.

“They kicked about eight goals to our one in the first quarter and, unfortunately, we just couldn’t play catch-up footy.”

Granleese said a weakened squad had also played a part in his side’s performance against the rejuvenated Bulldogs.

“They had a full playing roster and we had a lot of players away with university holidays, so it wasn’t easy for us,” he said.

Following the loss, the Nomads have slipped to second position and must now travel to Inverell this weekend to face the Saints.

New England edged the Saints 79 (12.7) – 75 (11.9) when the side last met back in round five.

Granleese said it would be another “incredibly tough” match against their first-placed opponents, but he was expecting to havea full squad at his disposal.
