AFL still our game

From the Armidale Express Extra’s ‘On ya, sport’, 07/06/2006
Australia has four favourite football codes – Aussie Rules, rugby league, rugby union and soccer (or the real ‘football’).

However it seems that our own indigenous form of sport – Aussie Rules – is still top of the table.

Statistics fro mthe Australian Football League show that in 2005 there was 539,526 registered Australian football players – more than any other code.

That’s an increase of 4.6 per cent on 2004.

However, with a new generation tuned into the soccer, football might yet gain a stronger foothold.
